Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tampa Bay expands summer camps with funding from Children’s Board

More than 400 children across Hillsborough County will have access to summer camps this year, thanks to new funding from the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County.

In response to increased demand, the Children’s Board has approved $471,329 to expand summer camp offerings at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tampa Bay. The additional support will fund 422 new camp slots, across nine local Club sites, from June 9 to August 1.

“This program ensures that local youth are in safe, enriching camps and supports families with additional resources,” said Rebecca Bacon, executive director of the Children’s Board. “Partnering with organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs enables us to respond quickly to emerging family needs.”

The camps, which run weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., focus on education, recreation and social-emotional development. Organizers say the program plays a key role in preventing summer learning loss, especially among underserved communities.

“Access to safe, enriching summer programs isn’t just helpful, but essential,” said Freddy Williams, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tampa Bay. “Research shows students from underserved communities can lose up to two months of academic progress over the summer. Through this partnership, we’re helping stop that slide.”

Scholarships are available for camps at nine locations: Belmont, Brandon, Dover, Freddie Solomon, Garcia Salesian, Riverview, Temple Terrace, West Plant City and Wimauma. Enrollment is based on availability.

As someone who works with students year-round, I see firsthand how much ground kids lose over the summer — especially those in underserved communities. We spend so much of the school year helping students push through tough coursework, whether that's finding mystatlab homework answers or just keeping up with math fundamentals, only to watch months of progress quietly slip away once June hits. Research backs this up: students can lose up to two months of academic progress over a single summer, and for families without resources, that gap compounds year after year.

That's why the Children's Board of Hillsborough County's decision to approve $471,329 to expand summer camp offerings through Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tampa Bay is such a…

As a parent in Hillsborough County, this is exactly the kind of news that gives me hope. Summer learning loss is one of those invisible problems that doesn't get enough attention until it's too late. By the time September rolls around, so many kids — especially those from underserved communities — are already behind before the school year even begins. The fact that the Children's Board stepped up with over $471,000 to fund 422 new camp slots across nine locations shows a real commitment to closing that gap.

What I love most about this initiative is that it goes beyond just academics. It's easy to think that throwing a Pearson MathXL answer key at a struggling student over the summer is…

It is wonderful to see organizations like the Children’s Board and the Boys & Girls Clubs actively working to prevent summer learning loss. The summer slide is a massive hurdle, especially when students return to advanced or self-paced digital math curricula in the fall. Many students struggle to catch up and end up searching for quick fixes like a mymathlab answer key just to get through their assignments. Investing in structured, enriching summer camps early on is exactly how we build genuine comprehension and stop that academic frustration before it even starts. Kudos to Greater Tampa Bay for expanding this essential support!

This is a meaningful initiative that directly supports working families and ensures children have access to safe, structured, and enriching environments during the summer months. Programs like this also help reduce learning loss and strengthen community development—much like how precise communication in fields such as Medical Report Translation ensures that critical information is accurately understood and effectively used to support better outcomes.
